לפי המסורת , הסופגנייה ניתנה לאדם וחווה שגורשו מגן העדן ומכאן שמה : סוף–גן–יה .
הסופגנייה מסמלת את המעבר אל העולם שמחוץ לגן העדן . העולם הזה הוא כמו הסופגנייה :
עגול , יש קו אמצע המשווה אותו לשניים , צריך לדעת לאכול אותו בלי להתלכלך והחוכמה הכי גדולה היא להגיע לריבה שבתוכו .
לתוכן הפנימי שהוא עיקר מהותו של העולם .
מאחל לכולנו לקראת חג החנוכה , שנדע ליהנות מהמעטפת החיצונית של החיים , אך שנמצא את הדרך לאור,
למיצוי המתיקות הפנימית של העולם .
